Day 3 – New Orleans

New Orleans is ‘home’ to my dad, who was born and raised here, and my grandmother lived here until she passed away a few years ago.  As a kid I would visit the city occasionally to see my grandmother, but it hasn’t been until the last few years that I really got ‘into’ New Orleans.  It started off like most non-natives, courtesy of Mardi Gras, but has evolved in the last few years as I’ve learned more of the history and the ‘real’ New Orleans.  It might be hard to believe, but there is SO much more to the city than Bourbon Street and the French Quarter (though don’t get me wrong, those are great places!).

Toni’s Tomorrow

The mission of 29 Days Until 29 is to raise cancer awareness and replace the negative connections that we all share because of cancer with positive experiences and connections. There are MANY GREAT organizations, charities, and causes that share the same goals. I’ve been fortunate enough to hear about some of these great organizations on my trip. I hope that some of you in Charlottesville were able to make it over to the Pink Heals tour yesterday! Today I’d like to share another cause with you that I was told about in an email.

Toni Madsen is a single mom with an 11 year old son in St. Petersburg, Florida.  This past July, Toni was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer with lymphatic involvement.  In plain english?  Bad.  Please visit the website, Toni’s Tomorrow, to learn more about Toni, her fight against cancer, and please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Day 2 – Boston

Day 2 of my journey was spent in Boston.  My tour around the city started with lunch at a place called Joe’s.  I was there to meet David Starmer, who used to live in Charlottesville.  Both his mom and dad are cancer survivors.  His mom had breast cancer and has been cancer free for 20+ years.  His dad had prostate cancer and melanoma.  I asked him how those experiences have changed him and changed his parents. The Pink Heals Tour

Yesterday I received an email from my fire chief. He had received a message from the City of Charlottesville fire chief and wanted to pass it along to me. While I’m really glad that I’ve started my 29 Days Until 29 journey, part of me wishes that I was home in Charlottesville today so that I could be apart of what’s happening there. Continue reading

Day 1 – JFK & Boston

Day 1 has been everything that I hoped that it would be!  Up early (ie no sleep) to get to Dulles, met some folks before I even got on the flight, heard a moving cancer connection journey, and then lift off!

Once I got to JFK the scene was amazing, Jetters from all over the country, people that I’ve met on Facebook and Twitter, all together talking to one another and sharing schedules, tips, ideas, etc… The 29 Days Until 29 story was already familiar to some and it was an easy segway to start talking to people!
